Closest friends of mine know that I’m a clumsy drawer. As far as I can remember this kind of skill was missing from the early beginning. On my notebooks terrible patterns were drawn for the entire period of primary school years. But, afterwards, it has been even worse. I was at the secondary school when suddenly I understand what was the new subject called Technical drawing. So, meanwhile most of my classmates were comfortable drawing kind of three dimensional object, I was stuck asking myself “what the hell is this?”. Anyway, as everybody knows “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, during the high school I found a solution: latin version translated in Italian versus drawings or paintings.
Chi mi conosce da tempo sa quanto io sia impedita a disegnare. Già dalle elementari i primi segni di mancanza di manualità erano evidenti: terribili cornicette abbellivano (come no!!!) pagine di quaderni di matematica (due incubi che si materializzano in una sola giornata). Ho passato gli anni delle scuole medie a chiedermi cosa diavolo fossero le proiezioni ortogonali che ci costringevano a disegnare nell’ora di educazione tecnica. Alle scuole superiori, finalmente, trovai una soluzione: versioni di latino tradotte in cambio di disegni a mano libera.
So, when it became possible, I decided to give up any artistic ideas and projects. But, since I’m a curious person, I hold my interest about the world of art in general. For that reason, a couple of weeks ago, I dragged my husband to a gallery for the launch of this book: Graffiti South Africa by Cale Waddacor. Inside you can find hundreds and hundreds of pictures of graffiti and street art done from the early 2000 until 2013 in different parts of South Africa.
Crescere vuol dire anche poter scegliere. E così nel corso degli anni ho liberamente scelto di abbandonare qualsiasi velleità artistica sostituendo questa mancanza con un interesse (altalenante) nei confronti dell’arte in generale. Oggi, lo dico con onestà, guardo con un misto di invidia e di ammirazione chiunque riesca a creare, disegnare e a dipingere con talento. Ed è per questo motivo che qualche sabato fa ho trascinato il marito alla presentazione del primo libro sui graffiti e street art del Sudafrica. Il libro comprende moltissime foto a partire dai primi anni Duemila fino al 2013 circa.
