This is my first post. It has been quite hard to write about me and about the idea behind the blog. So, I decided that my first post would be simple. And I don’t know anything more simple nor astonishing than nature. These are some pictures taken during this period of year when Johannesburg and Pretoria are covered in purple color. In other words, the jacaranda’s trees are blossoming.

Inauguro oggi il mio primo post. Siccome è stato particolarmente arduo buttare giù due righe su di me e sul blog, ho pensato di iniziare con qualcosa di semplice ma di grande effetto scenico (e la natura, in questo, mi aiuta parecchio). Tra ottobre e novembre, con l’arrivo della primavera/estate Johannesburg e Pretoria si tingono di viola: in altre parole le jacaranda sono in fiore.

A little bit of history: native from South America but imported at the end of the 19th century, the jacarandas, have found in this little piece of Africa a new home. In less than one century they have graced parks, streets and private gardens. Johannesburg, with these trees and others one, is well know as “the world’s largest man-made forest” and Pretoria, particularly, is called “Jacaranda City”. These species, nowadays, has been declared an invasive tree and it’s not longer possible to plant or replace the existing ones without control.

Un pò di storia: originarie del Sud America ma importate alla fine dell’800 le jacaranda hanno fatto di questa piccola porzione di Africa la loro nuova casa. In meno di un secolo hanno abbellito parchi, strade e giardini privati contribuendo a rendere Johannesburg “the world’s largest man-made forest” e Pretoria “Jacaranda city”. Ad oggi, questa specie, è stata inclusa nell’elenco delle piante invasive tale per cui non è più possibile piantare o sostituire quelle esistenti con esemplari più giovani. Probabilmente un’anticipazione della corrente “stay local, eat local, buy local …”

In case you don’t like purple just head to Pretoria: you can spot the white jacarandas.
Nel caso non piacesse il viola, a Pretoria, si possono ammirare le jacaranda bianche.
